DEBBIE’S Story

Debbie’s work is inspired by her background growing up in East London. Areas of complete contrast sitting side by side, the dilapidated areas of disrepair, rust and graffiti of Brick Lane and the contrasting opposite of the city with its immaculate glass and metal architecture. Contrast is a theme that crops up in her work which is expressed very simply often with colour or materials.

The discovery of the concept of Wabi Sabi many years ago also informed her work. In simple terms the belief that there is a beauty in imperfection. The extreme importance of this in todays society where there is a pressure to strive for ‘perfection’. Her admiration of the Kintsugi concept that something that is broken can be made even more beautiful with repair has also been an influence in her work

The collaboration of different mediums can be found in her practice including ceramics, textiles, wood, metal and concrete
